FREZO: Where Mid-Century Heritage Meets Modern Bespoke Design

The story of FREZO began in the 1950s with the monumental wall compositions of Toruń artist Franciszek Michałek. Though many of his original murals were destroyed by time, the discovery of hundreds of hidden sketches allowed us to digitally reconstruct his visionary art for modern interiors. Today, we bridge the gap between mid-century heritage and contemporary design, offering award-winning wallpapers and artistic accents that breathe new life into lost masterpieces.

More Than a Brand.
A Tribute to Art

FREZO was born from a deep respect for the monumental heritage of the 20th century. It is a story of rediscovering hidden masterpieces and bringing them back to life in modern spaces.

The Origins

The history of our designs dates back to the 1950s. After graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts under the mentorship of the renowned Tymon Niesiołowski—one of the most prominent Polish painters of the 20th century—Franciszek Michałek (1923–2006) chose a path of creative independence. Declining an academic career, he moved to Bydgoszcz to focus on monumental wall compositions. Over the next three decades, he designed several dozen large-format paintings for sanatoriums, cafes, hotels, and cinemas, making monumental art his lifelong specialty and passion.

The Discovery

In the early 1980s, Franciszek withdrew from the art world, and his work slowly faded into oblivion. Many of his murals were lost, covered by the uninspired decorations of the late 80s and 90s. The story might have ended there, but after his passing, a hidden treasure was found: hundreds of never-before-seen designs and sketches. This vast collection led to a major retrospective exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Art in Toruń. Inspired by this legacy, Franciszek’s son and a group of friends began digitally reconstructing these motifs, bringing them to life as luxury wallpapers. Thus, FREZO was born—a name merging “Franciszek” with “Fresco,” featuring a logo inspired by the artist’s signature “F.”

Beyond the Walls

Over the years, the FREZO portfolio has expanded to include designer fabrics, carpets, artistic ceramics, and posters. Despite this diversity, every product shares a common denominator: the unique atmosphere and imaginative spirit of Franciszek Michałek. Sketches created over half a century ago are thoughtfully reinterpreted by contemporary artists to fit perfectly into modern, sophisticated interiors.

Recognition

FREZO has been repeatedly honored for both its design excellence and uncompromising quality. Our collections have received the prestigious Must Have 2017 mark from the Łódź Design Festival and reached the finals of the Good Design competition organized by the Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw. We are also proud recipients of a distinction from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Our reach is global—in 2019, the “Mania” carpet, based on Franciszek’s drawings, received a special distinction at the Abimad fair in São Paulo, Brazil.

"I don’t know if Franciszek Michałek liked music. Perhaps he was listening to the radio when designing mosaics or scratching his lyrical compositions in black celluloid. He certainly knew „Na moście w Avignon”, a poem by Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński sung masterfully by Ewa Demarczyk. But did he feel any artistic communion with the poet who tragically died in the Warsaw Uprising? In my opinion, although they used various means of expression, they share a strong generational relationship. And maybe it was the mythical spirit of the times that made the lines of „Sur le pont d’Avignon” perfect for illustrating the atmosphere of Michałek’s artistic work."
